Driving in Sri Lanka gives you the freedom to explore its breathtaking landscapes and hidden gems. But before you hit the road, there’s one important step: getting a Sri Lankan Recognition Driver Permit.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to secure your permit—whether you’re driving a car, scooter, or tuktuk. With a little preparation, you’ll be ready to make the most of your Sri Lankan adventure. Let’s dive in!

How to Apply for a Sri Lankan Recognition Driver’s Permit

Here are the two ways you can apply:

  1. Using Your Home Country Driver’s License
  2. Using Your International Driver’s Permit (IDP)

Important Notes:

  • If you apply using your home country driver’s license, the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) will issue you a Recognition Permit valid for 3 months.
  • If you apply using your International Driver’s Permit (IDP), you can receive a Recognition Permit with a validity of 12 months.

How do I get my international driver permit in Germany?

To obtain an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) in Germany, you must apply through an authorized organization such as the German Automobile Association (ADAC). If you need your IDP quickly, you can visit a local ADAC office to complete the application in person. You will need to provide a passport-sized photo, your valid German driver’s license, and proof of identity.

Alternatively, you can apply for your IDP online through the ADAC website by uploading a passport photo and a clear image of both the front and back of your driver’s license.

Once your application is processed, the IDP will be mailed to the address you provide. The cost is generally around 20, excluding postage fees.
